Cardiovascular Medical Research and Education Fund (CMREF) Update
Presented by:
Vallerie V. McLaughlin, MD
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, MI
Raymond Benza, MD
Allegheny General Hospital - Pittsburgh, PA
Scott Visovatti, MD
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, MI
Michaela Aldred, PhD
Cleveland Clinic - Cleveland, OH
The Cardiovascular Medical Research and Education Fund (CMREF) mission is the support of research to uncover the etiology and pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH), in pursuit of the ultimate goal of its treatment and cure. In 2006, the CMREF established the Pulmonary Hypertension Breakthrough Initiative (PHBI) Research Network, a network of multidisciplinary, collaborative transplant and research centers each headed by an investigator interested in studying the pathogenesis of IPAH.
In this presentation, Dr. McLaughlin will give a brief overview of the PHBI and discuss lung processing and failed donor lung procedures, and Dr. Benza will describe lung processing and failed donor lung procedures at the Transplant and Preparation Centers. Dr. Aldred will discuss her center's scientific research on the genetic analysis of PH lung tissues, and Dr. Visovatti will describe his center's research on the role of ectonucleotidases in PAH.
Specialized Centers of Clinically Oriented Research (SCCOR) Update
Presented by:
Paul Hassoun, MD
Johns Hopkins Hospital / Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine - Baltimore, MD
Kurt Stenmark, MD
University of Colorado Denver - Aurora, CO
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Specialized Centers of Clinically Oriented Research (SCCOR) in Pulmonary Vascular Disease program is a multi-project grant that involves both basic and clinical research in pulmonary vascular disease. Drs. Paul Hassoun and Kurt Stenmark, both SCCOR Directors at their respective institutions, will present their work. Dr. Hassoun will discuss his SCCOR entitled "Molecular Determinants of Pulmonary Hypertension," and Dr. Stenmark will present his SCCOR on "Lung Vascular Disease in Infants and Children: Mechanisms and Treatment."
