3rd Annual North Carolina Research Triangle Pulmonary Hypertension Symposium

Location:
Sheraton Imperial Hotel
4700 Emperor Blvd
Durham, NC 27703
Date:
Nov 11 2011 - 7:00am - 4:00pm
Intended Audience:
This course is primarily intended for Pulmonologists, Cardiologists and other Allied Healthcare Professionals involved in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
Description:

This course seeks to underscore the importance of the proper diagnostic approach to, and treatment of, pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is often difficult to determine appropriate treatment and diagnostic pathways in certain populations of patients with this disorder. We seek, by way of literature (evidence-based), expert opinion, panel discussions and case presentations to educate physicians about how to detect, diagnose, treat and refer PAH patients to specialty centers. This is an often missed diagnosis that has proven treatments. The treatment and diagnostic paradigms for PAH are ever-evolving and frequent symposia such as this are necessary to keep specialty physicians updated and ensure current care is being delivered to PAH patients.

Description:

This course is designed to update clinicians and health care providers on upto-date information about pulmonary hypertension and veno-thromboembolic disease. In particular, the course will emphasize proper diagnosis of the aforementioned conditions, which directly leads to more appropriate treatment practice. The course will also highlight the limits community-based practitioners should exercise when managing patients with these conditions and provide guidance for collaborating with tertiary care centers. The symposium will also provide a forum for networking with specialized centers in the region, in an effort to foster collaboration.

By the conclusion of this activity, practitioners should have a better understanding of the types of pulmonary hypertension and when to consider treating with PAH-specific medications. Topics discussed will include: the changing epidemiology of PAH populations and natural history of right heart failure; the latest testing modalities and treatment practices for venothrombolic disease; new and emerging anticoagulation practices.

Pulmonary Hypertension: An Update on Evaluation and Treatment

Location:
Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville
4500 San Pablo Road
Jacksonville, FL 32224
Date:
Aug 27 2011 - 7:30am - 3:30pm
Intended Audience:
This course is designed for cardiologists, pulmonologists, rheumatologists, critical care, internal medicine, and family medicine physicians who evaluate and manage pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
Description:

This one day course is designed to improve and update the knowledge of the health care provider for evaluating and managing pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It will enable the clinician to select appropriate diagnostic tests and determine the best treatment option for the patient. In addition, the clinician will understand and appreciate the role of lung transplantation in the management of PAH so patients can be appropriately counseled. Recommendations on appropriate referrals to PAH and Transplant Centers will be discussed. Case studies will be emphasized to illustrate practice principles

Course Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Apply evidence-based diagnostic guidelines to make an accurate diagnosis earlier in the course of the disease.
  • Determine which pateints in non-group 1 pulmonary hypertension require specific treatment.
  • Describe and employ guidelines for referral of patients with end-stage liver or severe lung disease for transplant evaluation.
  • Appreciate advances in cardiac imaging for pulmonary hypertension.

5th Annual Pulmonary Hypertension Symposium

Location:
New Britain Museum of American Art
56 Lexington Street
New Britain, CT
Date:
Jun 7 2011 - 7:30am - 4:30pm
Description:

Pulmonary hypertension affects more than 25 million individuals worldwide and causes premature disability and death for many. The diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension have advanced dramatically through the development of a clearly defined diagnostic classification, an evidence-based treatment algorithm for adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension using life-saving medications and life-saving surgical procedures.

This course will help licensed care providers to understand the important elements in discerning PAH from other forms of pulmonary hypertension as well as the proper role of acute vasodilator testing in this disorder. It will also explore the special role of resting and exercise echocardiography in the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension exposing both strengths and pitfalls of this diagnostic tool. It will update care givers on the currently available therapies and their proper use in PAH, and discuss the impact these agents have had on survival in recent years. It will also explore the cognitive impact of PAH as well as the impact on quality-of-life that this devastating disease can have.

Learning Objectives

Participants who attend this conference will be able to:

  • Explain why vasodilator testing is of pivotal importance in heritable and idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) but may not play a role in certain associated forms of PAH
  • Discuss the data supporting the role of the nine currently available PAH-specific therapies and review new potential therapies in development
  • Explain the controversy of exercise echocardiography testing to unmask undetected pulmonary hypertension
  • Identify the cognitive impact of PAH and the quality-of-life issues these patients face
  • Discuss what impact the current PAH-specific therapies have had on survival
