Understanding Compassion Fatigue

November 1, 2012

Pulmonary arterial hypertension(PAH) is a chronic, progressive disease that frequently requires personalized patient education and, ultimately, the need to transition to palliative care.  Healthcare providers caring for patients with PAH bear witness to the emotional pain of these patients and provide support through the process of anticipatory loss, disbelief, complex medical management and grief. This can leave the health care provider with emotional scars that can impact all facets of their lives, from interactions with patients to their private lives.  In this webinar, Crystal Weber, RN, a nurse clinician at Duke University, discusses the point at which emotional scarring becomes compassion fatigue and what can be done to manage CF so that the healthcare provider can take care of themselves in both their personal and professional lives.
